About Jalsa Salana
The Jalsa Salana is the three-day annual convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. Regularly held since 1983, this year it takes place for the 42nd time in Switzerland and is thus the largest regular meeting of Muslims in this country.
The history of this event goes back to 1891, when the founder of the reform movement, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani(as), called out Jalsa Salana for the first time in Qadian (India). Since then it has firmly established itself in many countries of the world. For example, the Jalsa Salana in Germany and England, with over 30,000 participants each, are the largest Muslim gatherings in Europe.
Purpose of Jalsa Salana
„The primary purpose of this Convention is to enable every sincere individual to personally experience religious benefits; They may enhance their knowledge and –due to their being blessed and enabled by Allah, The Exalted- their perception [ of Allah ] may progress. Among its secondary benefits is that this congregational meeting together will promote mutual introduction among all brothers, and it will strengthen the fraternal ties within this Community.“ (Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad QadianiAS - Majmoo‘ah Ishtiharat Band I, S. 340)
"The aim and purpose of the Jalsa is for the members of our Jamaat to make such a change in themselves that their hearts turn completely to the Hereafter. They should develop the fear of God in themselves and become models of virtue, respect for God and compassion for others. They should prove mutual love and brotherhood to each other. They should be gentle, humble and true and ready to spread the faith." (Roohani Khazain, Band 6, Shahadatul Quran, S.394)
Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is an Islamic reform community founded in 1889 by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) from Qadian India (1835-1908), - who claimed God's command to be Promised Messiah and Mahdi of Islam for all mankind prophesied by the Holy Prophet Muhammad(saw). His task from Allah was not to found a new religion, but to revive Islam in its original peaceful form and to reform the Muslims.
The community is one of the largest Islamic organizations in Switzerland. The first German translation of the Holy Quran (1954) and the construction of the first mosque in Switzerland (Mahmud Mosque Zurich, 1963) are considered pioneering achievements. The main concern is also to clear up superstitions and errors introduced by people and to eliminate prejudices against Islam through enlightenment. Away from blind fanaticism, it rejects all violence and terror in the name of religion.
The Worldwide Head
The fifth caliph of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(atba) occupies a unique position in the world of Islam, for it is he who, as the purely spiritual head of all Ahmadi Muslims, has a theological authority that has reached global proportions for tens of millions of followers far beyond national borders. The Caliph who presides over a purely spiritual Caliphate is the successor of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani(as), reformer of the Latter Days. The current Caliph is a graduate agricultural economist and spent several years of his life in Ghana/Africa under the auspices of the "Nusrat Jahan Scheme". There he supervised various development aid projects. After his return he worked in various institutions of the community. In 2003 His Holiness was elected the fifth Caliph of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. He is strongly committed to international and interdenominational peace and repeatedly calls on the international community to establish a humane society based on tolerance and justice.
